Why This Recipe Works

This easy side of roasted frozen green beans works well with roast chicken, fish, grilled meats, and so many other meals.

Weekdays are often so filled with life, between work, school, tests, sports, squeezing in time with family and friends. It can be difficult to keep up with meal prep, especially peeling and chopping vegetables.

Frozen vegetables are a quick solution, but so much of the time we just end up throwing them in a pot of water to boil and missing out on all the flavor and crunch that vegetables have to offer.

That's why this roast green bean recipe works. It's a simple alternative to steaming green beans that keeps them full of flavor (especially with the added orange) and holds onto its crispness when you take a bite.

No more mushy beans! These roasted frozen green beans are just as yummy as fresh green beans.

With this method, I can include the fiber and nutrients I need to eat for perimenopause without it taking long to prepare when I'm short on time.

It also gives me peace of mind knowing my immune compromised teenage daughter is getting a balanced meal.

Sometimes we just need to get a little creative, that's why I like to apply tricks I learned when I was studying to be a chef at Silwood Kitchens to the simplest recipes, like roasting frozen green beans.

Ingredients

The ingredients for this roast frozen green beans recipe are sweet and simple:

  • Green beans: one of my favorite veggies for adding fiber to a meal. I don't know about you, but I enjoy their crispy crunch.
  • Butter: nothing quite flavors and caramelizes a meal like butter.
  • Salt and pepper: simplicity at its best. In this particular recipe, it works to bring out the flavor of our roasted frozen green beans.
  • Orange: I like to add the zest and juice to this recipe for a fresh, fun, citrusy flavor. My children love it!

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

1. Gather your ingredients together and preheat the oven to 425°F / 220°C.

2. Add the green beans with olive oil, salt, spices and herbs to a roasting pan. Coat well and roast the beans for 15 minutes.

3. Add in the orange juice, zest and butter. Roast the beans for another 5 to 10 minutes.

4. Your frozen roasted green beans are ready to serve.

Hint: If you prefer your roast frozen green beans to be softer, cover the baking sheet and cook for 15 minutes longer at a lower temperature.

Substitutions

There aren't many substitutions for roast frozen green beans, but here are a few other vegetables this method of roasting frozen green beans will work well with:

  • Fresh beans: use fresh beans instead. Frozen beans needs about 5 to 10 minutes more than fresh so just take that off the cooking time.
  • Stir fry: swap out the frozen green beans for a frozen stir fry veg mix.
  • Country crop: if you're not a fan of frozen green beans or stir fry veg mix you could roast a country crop mix instead.
  • Sweet potato or pumpkin: this is a great method for roasting frozen sweet potato fries or pumpkin chunks too. In fact, why not both?
  • Broccoli: keep it green with frozen broccoli florets.
  • Cauliflower: who doesn't love roasted cauliflower?

Variations

Here are a few other ways to flavor your roast frozen green beans:

  • Pour over some garlic butter to serve.
  • Use lemon instead of orange.
  • Add fresh herbs like parsley chopped and tossed through.
  • Use rosemary instead of thyme.
  • Serve your green beans with toasted pine nuts or slivered almonds to be fancy.
  • Leave out the orange, thyme and butter and just roast the green beans plain with olive oil and salt.
  • Top with a sprinkle of parmesan, pecorino or crumbed feta once cooked. I like to use the Gourmet Greek feta.
  • Sprinkle the roasted green beans with a Thai spice mix, Italian herbs or coriander and black cumin.
  • Add some sesame and sunflower seeds to the dish.
  • Coat the green beans with onion and garlic powder.
  • Serve the roasted green beans with tzatziki or other yogurt dip.
  • Flavor the green beans with honey and mustard.
  • Drizzle with balsamic vinegar before serving.

Equipment

All you need for this roast frozen green bean recipe is your oven dish and a serving spoon.

Storage

These roast frozen green beans will store well in the fridge for 3 to 5 days. Reheat and crisp them in a pan on the the stove or in your oven just before you're ready to serve.

They can also be meal prepped and frozen again, but I prefer to make them fresh. They're already such a quick side dish.

Top Tips

Frozen green beans are anything but boring and soggy when they're roasted. Here are some things to keep in mind to help you make the perfect roast green beans:

  • Serve these roasted frozen green beans fresh out the oven for the most crispy, enjoyable side dish.
  • Always make sure you preheat your oven first.
  • Unless you're using fresh beans, always cook the green beans straight from frozen to keep them from becoming soggy.
  • If there's too much ice on the beans, dust that off first.
  • Long string beans roast a little more crispy than the short cuts of green beans, but both roast well directly from frozen.

FAQ

Can I cook these roast frozen green beans in an air fryer?

Sure, you can cook these roast frozen green beans in an air fryer.

My roasted frozen green beans are too soft, what should I do?

If your roast beans are too soft, just leave them in the oven for a few minutes longer until they crisp up.

I don't have an oven, will this work fried in a pan?

Yes, you can fry it in a pan, it won't quite be the same but it will still be crispy and flavorful.
